Knowing your audience

I wish all we had to do was write a story. But the truth is we need to know so much more than the story. We need to know who we’re writing for; the age of our audience; the genre we’re writing in; and how we’re going to market both our work and ourselves as an author.

We need to know all these things so we can market and promote effectively. The career of author encompasses marketing, promoting, salesmanship, branding either a series or your author name. Where do you find your audience? How can you talk to them? When I sit and actually think of everything that needs done I feel like I’m being buried under details when all I want to do is write an entertaining story.

Holly Lisles covers a lot of these topics in her classes but for discussion you can go here.
